...compared to the more popular EJ turbo engines. They have potential, and sound just as good.

It's usually the flat-6s that Subaru makes - all are unloved.

Well, when I say all, I meant all except the ER27.

Both the turbo and N/A fours sound good if they are done right (read: understated). The loud for the sake of loud exhausts don't do the sound any favors, and give it a bit of a bad name. These are some examples of the flat 4 sound done right, in my opinion:

Of course, there are other examples out there, and I might be a little biased.

My previous car was an 05 xt 5 speed, even silver like the one in the video....and I hated the sound. Some people like that left bank - left bank, right bank - right bank offset v-twin noise....but to me its just noise.

my actual car.

For me, the flat 4 sound has character. Most of the engine sounds in the cars I grew up around did not . Before we moved to only flat engines, we mostly had cars with inline 4s (a 4A-FE, a 5S-FE, and an AWM). There was also a Taurus with the Vulcan 3.0. I don't remember much of it though, as I was 5 when we got rid of it . While they all did sound decent, the sound they made wasn't too memorable. All of them seemed to lack character, sounding too generic and quiet. I'm sure if I grew up around some better sounding inline 4s, and a few V6s and V8s, I would probably have a slightly different opinion. However, I'm quite happy with the sound of both the flat 4 and flat 6 we have in the family right now.
